Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: The Arrival of Spring

Posted on March 7, 2015

Each day the sun rises higher into the sky, returning northward from its venture into the southern horizon as we push to break free from the coldest part of the year. Nature is awakening, new life is poised ready to explode forth from beneath the soil. There is an aliveness which fills the air, providing nourishment to anyone who takes a moment to receive it. The fish, they feel it too, their vital energy increasing with the warming waters, they become more lively and aggressive. The spawning season is approaching. The sows have already started moving into their pre spawn patterns and are getting ready to make a 60 mile run up river which may occur anytime between the first of April through the end of May. They will not all go at once, only the big fish will make the journey, that’s why we release them when we are lucky enough to land one in the boat. They lay their eggs in running water far up river which will carry them floating along for many miles before they hatch into baby stripers. If the eggs fall into the silt before they hatch they will be killed. Because of this, there are very few lakes with the necessary conditions for stripers to reproduce. We are blessed with having Lake Texoma as one of them enabling it to become one of the top striper fisheries in the world. The prolific nature of these fish is astounding providing an abundance of fish which provide for so many in so many ways. I am grateful to have the opportunity to enjoy a career doing something I love to support my family.

The snow has been beautiful, building snow men and going sledding with my 2 year old little boy Aidan and my wife Megan has been priceless but I’m ready to be back out on the water. After having to reschedule my trips, it’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve been out but we were still catching big fish when I left them. It has been a fantastic winter for these big fish and it’s not over yet. There are as many big fish in the lake now as I have ever seen. We should continue to catch these monsters here and there until they make their spawning run, whenever that may be. Even then there are still plenty of fish to be caught but the chance at a trophy is diminished. Right now, we’re still casting lures to catch fish and I don’t expect to switch to bait until sometime in April or early May but you never know, as every year is different. The fish should be moving into their pre spawn patterns with the arrival of the warmer weather which means they can be found in the shallower water along flats and in the creeks. I don’t mark as many fish in this pattern, a few scattered hooks on the graph are a good sign to stop and make a long drift.

Spring break is fast approaching, my weekend dates are moving fast but there are several week day slots still open for the taking so act fast if you want to reserve a trip in the next few weeks. I operate based on the gift economy meaning I have no set rates. We go fishing and you are free to give in return whatever feels right to you. I’ve been doing business this way for going on 2 years and I have really enjoyed it. I hope those who have come fishing with me have as well. I never know what the fish are going to do on any given day, one day the fishing is great and the next it is slow, so it was hard for me to charge a set rate. This way we are just out there to enjoy fishing together. You can book your trip online at www.stripersinc.com or give me a call anytime at (903)815-1609 and I’ll be happy to get you set up or answer any questions you may have. I’ll be looking forward to fishing with you.
