Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: The Big Fish Are Back

Posted on May 18, 2017

As the days are growing longer and warmer the flowers are blooming and the birds are singing, know too that the fish are biting. Spring is one of the most productive and consistent times to come out and catch fish here on Lake Texoma and it is such a pleasure just to be out on the water in the beautiful spring weather. The stripers have recently made their return from their spawning run up the Red and Washita Rivers and are back in the main lake with an appetite.

We have been catching lots of fish ranging from 4-12 pounds on all of my trips this past week. The shad are spawning and abundant, and catching bait is easy, just look for them flipping along the banks at dawn, watch for the egrets along the bank to locate them. We are now exclusively using live bait and fish are being caught on anchor over ledges in 20-35ft. of water. You may not see many fish on the graph but if they are in the vicinity they will come to you when you you get baits down. My last trip was the best thus far with the amount of large fish we are catching, we caught all of our overs and turned back a lot more.

It seems to be a pretty consistent pattern that is developing, so make plans now to get in on this action. This pattern may shift at anytime but a new one will take its place and it looks like we are in for some great fishing all through the year and years to come with the population of fish that I'm seeing right now. If you are available, weekdays are always better fishing with less boat traffic and pressure on the fish.
