Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: The Fall Bite

Posted on October 6, 2010
The changing of the seasons is upon us and fall is my favorite time of the year for fishing. Fall brings the turning of the leaves, football, hunting season, Halloween, and Thanksgiving, but most of all, fall brings awesome fishing. During the cool crisp fall mornings, you can experience some of the best topwater fishing of the year. Fall also signals the arrival of the best fish finders around, the seagulls, and with the kids back in school and hunting season under way, there are fewer boats on the water to compete for the fish.
With the lake getting so hot this past summer, the topwater bite is a little slow getting going this year. The only awesome topater fishing so far this year has been in the rain and every other day has been hit or miss. Things do seem to be picking up though. The cooler temperatures we have been experiencing has dropped the water temperature on Lake Texoma considerably. I have been marking surface temperatures as low as 73⁰ and the ideal water temperature for stripers is in the 60’s, which means it is about to happen. Also, the fish are recovering nicely from the hot summer and most all of the skinny fish are now fat and healthy.
We are not binging in limits on a daily basis yet but we are still managing to bring in lots of fish on the slower days. The fish are still a little scattered and are in shallow water. All of my fish are coming in water of 17ft. or less and being caught using whatever method proves to be the most productive for the day as it seems to be changing daily from topwater, to drifting bait, to cohoes, to slabs, and all of the above. Fall is also the time to catch big cats back at the cleaning dock and it appears that they are already moving in as we had a 20 pounder caught yesterday.
