Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Fall Topwater Bite Begins

Posted on September 19, 2011

With an end to the heat wave and the drought, the arrival of fall has brought a much needed rejuvenation and a blessing for all living things, including our Lake Texoma stripers. The water temperature is cooling down nicely, I’m marking 76 degree surface temperature, and the elevation has even risen a bit from all the rain which has pushed the fish into the shallow water and initiated the beginning of fall topwater season which is my favorite way to fish. There is nothing more fun than seeing a big fish blow up on a pencil popper . Fishing has been fair to excellent on most days using lures. There are lots of small fish to be caught to provide a lot of action but most are too small to keep. If you want quality you have to change your tactics and work a little harder. We have been producing a lot of nice fish in the 4-6 pound range and on most days we are catching our limits of over 20” fish and turning several more back.

I have been catching all of my fish in 25 ft. or less using mostly lures. Topwaters, cohoes, and slabs have all been producing well working the shallow structure. I’ve tried using bait but have not had a lot of success, although I haven’t tried too hard as lures are more fun anyway, but I’m always ready with a tank full of bait just in case. I did hear of a report of bait working well one day but its not consistent yet.

Here are some pictures of the fish this past week:

I have started fishing evening trips again now that we have cooler weather, and the fish are biting just as well in the evenings as the mornings depending on the day, however, if topwater action is what you’re looking for, you will want to book a morning trip. Fall topwater season is some of the best fishing of the year and will last from now until the end of October. You can book your trip online at www.stripersinc.com or just give me a call at (903)815-1609 and I’ll get you set up.
