Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Fall Feeding Frenzy
Posted on October 17, 2011The changing of the seasons has brought many blessings our way, rain, beautiful weather, and some of the best striper fishing of the year here on Lake Texoma. The water temperature has cooled, the birds are showing up and the fish are biting like crazy. Catching your limit is normal right now but the size of fish may vary from trip to trip. Drifting bait in 20-25 ft. is working best but fish can also be easily caught using lures on most days. Topwater action early in the morning is slowing down but it is still good when a strong wind is present. Cohoes in the shallows and slabs out deep are all catching fish.
As many of you may have heard, Lake Texoma has been under a government issued blue green algae warning since August. To my knowledge, there has yet to be any reports of anyone becoming sick from this algae. Also, to ensure the water is safe for my clients, I have been swimming in the lake on a regular basis and have yet to notice any adverse effects. In my own humble opinion, the water is as safe as it has ever been. According to biologists the fish taken from the lake pose no health risk due to the algae and are perfectly safe to eat. All of this has greatly impacted the number of visitors we have here at Lake Texoma and I am seeing far fewer than usual boats on the water. Although I have had a few cancelations due to the algae, most of my customers have trusted my judgment of the water quality and kept their reservations. As a result they have enjoyed a lake void of other boats and great fishing. I have considered this whole thing has been a blessing as I have stayed busy without the added crowd. I will keep you updated on the lakes official status from the government.
Here are some pictures from the past few weeks:
Fishing in late fall is awesome fishing. You can use bait or lures, it seems that whatever you throw at them they will eat it. The birds arrive in large numbers and group up over the fish to show you where they are and usually it is as fast as you can get your line back out, fish on. Fishing should remain great through the end of December then it may slow down a bit but we tend to catch more of the big fish when it is colder.
