Lake Texoma Striper Fishing Blog

Winter has arrived, the coldest days are upon us while simultaneously the days are growing longer as spring draws ever nearer. This is my personal favorite time of the year to fish, lure season. From now until sometime in April, I put away my cast net and focus solely on fishing with lures. Lures provide for more excitement, you are always doing something rather than simply waiting, and enticing the fish to bite an artificial lure becomes a more rewarding experience. This is also the time of year when most of the biggest fish are caught, it is not uncommon to bring one or more fish over 10 pounds in the boat just about every trip we go out during this time. A few will even approach the 20 pound mark like the one we caught just before Christmas, a good fish indeed. In the cold the lake is peaceful, few venture out into the wonderland of the frosty air with the eagles, seagulls and waterfowl, but the ones who do are typically well rewarded. 
 

 

Currently, the fish can be found feeding under the birds in the deep water in several parts of the lake. My lure of choice is a 5” glow sassy shad on a 1 ½ oz. head with the tails dipped in chartreuse spike it to add a little color. There have been a few fish hanging out on their structure holes, which is where they can be found when they are not feeding. Structure on structure, like a brush pile or stump bed on a ledge or in a creek channel tends to continually hold fish and can be relied upon as a place to catch fish this time of year. I have these spots marked on my GPS and try not to disturb the fish by trying to mark them, I set up to drift over the spot with confidence they will be there, this seems to help in two ways. I’m fishing a good location so even if there are no fish to be marked we may still catch a fish or two, and if there are a lot of fish there we typically catch more of them by not disturbing them with the engine. Though fishing under the working birds is fun, it is unreliable and I prefer the consistency of the structure fishing.
