Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Its Summertime!
Posted on June 29, 2019 The booming population of big fish in Lake Texoma has allowed for some epic fishing so far this year with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Most of what we are catching are around 4-6 pounds with a few in the 8-12 pound range coming in each trip. These big fish really put up a fight too, when you get into them it's mayhem, everyone with a rod doubled over and stripping drag while I'm running around the boat like a madman trying to net all of the fish, get them unhooked, and get baits back in the water all at the same time. Looking around, all I see is smiling faces and everyone having a good time, that is what it is all about, making memories that people will share for a lifetime.
It is summertime now and that means our busy season is underway and in full swing. It is good to be busy but I have had to learn how to stay in balance. When I first started my own guide service going on 11 years ago, I took all the trips that called and fished doubles every chance I got. Then after fishing 30 days straight and 6 doubles in a row I started to get burned out and began to loose my love for fishing. I wanted to be successful but I didn't yet understand what it meant to succeed. Back then I thought success meant making as much money as I could, but I have come to realize that success is finding the enjoyment of life. Making a living doing something I love doing and having time to spend with my family is success, not how much money I make doing it. These days I make sure to take off at least one day a week and I rarely fish doubles anymore. In the hot summer, I fish mornings only and spend the evenings at home with my family. Now after 18 years of guiding professionally, I still love to fish and I get to share that while making memories with my clients doing what I love.
The fish we have been catching here lately are mostly coming in on live bait but there is a lure bite that is starting to develop as well and we have had some success casting topwaters and sassy shad in shallow water, though this pattern is not reliable just yet, I do expect it to start picking up. July is typically an excellent month for lure fishing. It looks like we have had a good shad spawn and those large schools of young shad are what get the fish worked up into a feeding frenzy hitting topwater. The water level on Texoma has been 10 ft. high for a good while now and the patterns are a little different, usually we are fishing in deep water at this time but not this year. Most all of the fish are still in shallow water right now, I've been staying in around 25 foot of water while fishing live bait and fishing lures in 15 feet or less. You may find a few fish out deeper but they will still be close to shallow water or along the river ledge somewhere.
