Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Get Ready For Big Fish Season!
Posted on November 27, 2023Yesterday out on the water wasn't a day most people would look for and decide “Hey, we have a 15-20mph N wind and temperature in the 30's, let's go fishing!” Most people would rather be huddled around a fireplace sipping a hot cup of coffee and watching the wind blow out the window, and I can't say blame them as there is a part of me that loves those things too. However there are also those of us who live and breath fishing that know that these strong cold fronts that blow through will often have the fish biting like crazy. Luckily, that's just what we got yesterday, the birds were working and going nuts over feeding as soon as we got on the water at 7:00. We didn't even have to drive far and found big groups of birds working hard several places in our area. The fish were hungry and ready to feed, we were catching mostly good healthy 18-22” fish using slabs and swimbaits and having a great time. My clients only wanted to keep a few fish and we released the rest until they told me they had had enough of the cold and were ready to come in so we left them biting and headed back to the marina. Keep in mind when you come and fish in the cold, you need the right gear. Dressing in layers with a windproof outer shell with good warm boots and gloves will keep you comfortable out there all day in any conditions. There is no need to be afraid of the cold, that is when some of the best fishing of the year happens. Just be prepared. Being out on those nasty cold days adds to the adventure and makes for a more memorable experience, especially when the fish were biting like they were yesterday.
We are in one of the peak feeding times of the year right now and the fish have been feeding aggressively most every day with lots of good solid fish are being caught. Slabs and swim baits are working well right now and there are also reports that dead sticking is starting to produce fish as well. Birds have been working in several areas around the lake to make finding the fish easy. Also, there aren't a lot of boats on the water to contend with right now. There is nothing better than finding the fish going crazy and you are the only boat around. This is why I prefer fishing during the colder part of the year, great fishing and no crowds!
We are right on the edge of the start of big fish season. If you want a chance at a 15-20lb fish, winter is the time of year that you want to come. I'm expecting the big fish to start feeding aggressively within the next couple of weeks. I have had some epic trips towards the end of December during Christmas break. It usually happens on a nasty weather day, we get on a school of big fish under the birds and land dozens of 10-15lb fish for some of the best fishing I have seen on Texoma. Structure fishing also gets hot during this time, when no birds are working and the fish aren't actively feeding, you can find them on structure and use swim baits to catch them. Structure on structure works best, stump beds on ledges or in creek channels will hold the most fish and you can mark these spots on the gps so you can depend on them every time you go out. This dependable type of fishing allowed me to go on a streak of about 2 months last year where we caught at least one 10-15lb fish every trip I was out. I'm ready to do it again this year! This is also the peak deadsticking time of the year to fish as well though I'm more often casting on structure because it is more dependable. More big trophy stripers are caught during the winter than any other time of the year.
