Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Too Many Big Fish!
Posted on July 21, 2010
With our wedding drawing ever closer our house has been transformed into wedding central. Megan is a DIY bride and has taken upon projects like making her own wedding invitations and flower arrangements. At first I thought this was a good idea to cut costs but after seeing the stress derived from completing an insurmountable amount of work and realizing that my help was required to get it all done, I have decided that any amount of money is worth having it all done for you. Needless to say, all of my free time the past week has been devoted to cutting, pasting, folding, and tying ribbon, which is not my preferred method to spend my day. Luckily, I have not had much free time due to the phenomenal fishing that we have been having here in July and I have been fishing nearly every day.
July is one of my best months for big fish and this July has been no different. Over half the fish that we are catching are over 20” and we are having to catch twice the limit or more just to be able to catch enough unders to fill out the limit. We are not catching as many 10-15 pounders as past Julys, we are only catching one every 2-3 trips, but we’re catching tons in the 6-8 lb range. The shortage of threadfins has definitely helped the bait fishing but has hurt the lure fishing. The lure fishing is hit and miss at best and there is little to no topwater action that I have seen, but the bait fishing is the best I’ve seen it for July. We are catching 60-100+ fish on every trip and still struggling to put a limit in the box because they are all over 20”.
I fished my first Camp Cavett trip this year on Sat. the 10th, which is a camp for chronically and terminally ill children. I fished the Saturday trip so that Megan could go with me and we ended up winning the big fish contest with an 8.9 lb striper. We had a blast fishing with those kids. That is truly a remarkable organization and I’m thankful that I was able to help. You can bet I’ll be back every year from now on.
All of my fish the past few weeks have been caught using live bait on anchor in 60-70 ft. of water and fishing about 30-35 ft. down. Since there is limited bait in the open water this year, the fish are scattered and are not schooling up. This is why the lure fishing has been tough. But when you throw anchor and beat the water and drop baits down. The fish are congregating under the boat and fish on! The fish seem to be biting like this all day and evening fishing is just as good as the morning and sometimes better. Hopefully this awesome fishing will continue until Aug 26 when I’ll take off for the wedding and honeymoon in Costa Rica. I’ll be back and available for booking September 16.
I have mornings of the 26, 27, and 29 available for next week and several trips still available for August. We will be having striper cooked for the wedding reception and I want them to be fresh. I will be having a special Aug 23-26 of $100/person to supply the fish for the reception. You will need to call me to book a trip during those days at (903)815-1609. After I return from Costa Rica Sept. 14, fall topwater season should be under way. Catching 10-15 lb fish on topwater during this time is very possible. You will be able to book your trip online at www.stripersinc.com but I will not be available by phone. I will have access to the internet from time to time so if you need to get in touch with me, send me an email and I will respond as soon as I get a chance.
