Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Lures are Hot in the Heat!

Posted on July 20, 2011

With an abundance of bait now prominent in Lake Texoma the lure fishing has really been hot out in the heat. There has been some short lived topwater action in the early mornings and late evenings with some great slab action in between. Weekends are still tougher than during the week because the added pressure and boat traffic generally shuts down the bite. It has been over a week since I caught anything using bait and I finally just quit catching it. Trying to force a bait bite right now is only going to cause you to miss out on the action and cost you some fish. For the most part we have been consistently bringing home good boxes of fish, coming in with a limit of just shy. We’ve been catching lots of fish over 20” which makes filling out the limit of fish under 20” a challenge some days but I have yet to hear a complaint from catching too many big fish.

I’ve been using cohoes, a soft plastic swim bait, under the topwater fish at first light which has worked out well some days and worse on others. You have to reel it fast along the surface and when they are hitting, we are hooking up every rod on every cast but it is short lived. After the first hour we are switching to a 2 oz. chartreuse hologram slab and drifting at a depth 25-40ft. while slapping the water to call them to the boat. The last couple of days they have preferred to have the slab jigged rather than burned up through the fish.

Saturday July 16 was a typical Saturday with s l o w fishing and lots of boat pressure. I brought in 10 fish for the morning trip and 6 for the evening trip (that’s the last evening I’m running until it cools off). I took off Sunday so I could enjoy the Thomas Martinez concert at Little Mineral Saturday night which was great. Little Mineral has put in a new beach and they had the concert right on the beach, it was a neat experience.

Monday the fishing picked back up in the absence of the added pressure. We picked up a few quick fish during the topwater bite and it was off to slabs. The slabs never really fired off but we steadily brought in fish until they quit around 10:00 we brought in 18 stripers and a sandbass for 2 people.

Tuesday 7/19, we did great during the topwater bite. I had a group of 3 and we piled fish in the boat as fast as we could cast out and take them off the hook. When the dust cleared and the fish finally went down we had fish laying all over the boat, and after the final count, we had 20 in the box with all of our overs. As usual the topwater bite didn’t last long but it was worthwhile. We switched to slabs and threw back several overs with a keeper here and there mixed in. The fish quit about 9:30 for us and had managed to pick through 9 more keepers to head in with 29, one shy of our limit. I love lure fishing, I always prefer it to live bait when it is good.

Right now the fishing is predominantly good with your standard tough day thrown in every so often, and that tough day might not even be due to the overall fishing, it might just be your turn to have a tough day. I’m not sure how long this lure bite will last, but I’m going to enjoy it while it does. Come check it out while the lure fishing is still hot!
