Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Spring Break is Here

Posted on March 7, 2014

The weather we have been having here recently has been quite a ride, moving from sunny and 80 degrees on one day to ice and 15 degrees the very next, what an incredible shift that was to experience. Though the cold is harsh it is priceless for the depth of beauty, gratitude and appreciation which is added for those warm peaceful days. Fishing is much like this weather, one never knows what to expect on a venture out onto the water. One day you can’t miss, catching fish everywhere you go. The very next day, their interest has faded. But as with the weather, contained within the slow days is an immeasurable value to be experienced on the days of abundance. Knowing this, it is my practice to be grateful for whatever comes into the present be it warm cold or hot, scarcity or abundance, sickness or health. As the poet Khalil Gibran puts it, “A friend who is far away is sometimes much nearer than the one at hand. Is not the mountain far more awe-inspiring and more clearly visible to one passing through the valley than to those who inhabit the mountain.”

Today’s fishing on Friday March 7, was one of those beautiful days of abundance. Catching our limit of 20 fish within the first hour gave us the freedom to explore in search of the big fish for the rest of the trip, which is my preferred target. We were using, as always, 5 in. glow sassys on a 1 ½ oz. head with their tails spiked in a chartreuse dye, working my typical winter pattern along the underwater structure of points and ledges in 10-25 ft of water. GPS is an incredible tool for this type of fishing as I am fishing structural location like a brush pile on a ledge rather than looking for fish which seems to prove more productive as I am not disturbing the school if they happen to be at “home” at that time. The slow and steady retrieve with the occasional change in speed, a pause or a couple of fast cranks seems to be the ticket. After catching and releasing at least another 20 or so fish on our expedition for the big one, we finally got the hit we were looking for at our last spot with a good 10-12 pound Lake Texoma Striper. It was certainly a beautiful day out on the water. As for what tomorrow holds,` that is anyone’s guess.

This week is spring break in our area, I am now about half way booked up so if you want to take the kids out to catch some of these beautiful stripers you need to act now to reserve a spot. I practice the gift economy meaning I have no set rates, we will go fishing as friends and after the trip you are free to give in return what feels right to you. Know that I am equally grateful for all that is received. You can book your trip online at www.stripersinc.com or give me a call at (903)815-1609 and I’ll get you set up. I’ll be looking forward to fishing with you.
