Fall is finally here which means everything is in flux and changing. The outgoing breath crests and begins to turn back inward as we begin to reap the harvest for all of our efforts we have put out this year. The first leaves are beginning to turn and fall from the trees as the last of summer's heat gives way to the first cool air and with it comes topwater season. This is certainly one of my favorite times to fish as nothing is better than seeing big fish blowing up on a pencil popper, knocking it up into the air 3 or 4 times before finally engulfing it for some good ol' rod bending, drag screaming fun. 

With that last cold front, the topwater season has officially started. My trip on Monday in the sprinkling rain was all topwater action. The fish continued to bite the entire time we were on the water, catching our limit of 30 fish with all our overs. We left them biting as when we went in around noon. The rain certainly helps the topwater action this time of year as it helps to keep them biting.
 

Every now and then you stumble onto one of these, we caught this fish a couple of weeks ago.

Typically we get good topwater action for the first hour of two and as the sunlight begins to illuminate and warm the water the fish will tend to move deeper, at which point we switch to live bait and follow in hot pursuit, trailing them to wherever they may venture into the depths which will usually be fishing the flats or ledges in 20-30ft. of water. Many days we are successful and our efforts are rewarded with a bounty of fish to enjoy while on other days we are blessed with the opportunity to let go of our attachments to success and simply enjoy our time spent on the water as we are shown the contrast to abundance.

The topwater season will run through the end of October but fishing can be good all through winter. Fall and winter are my favorite times to be on the water. As the crowd of the summer disperses, it reveals once again the peaceful nature of the lake while all of our winter birds arrive and fill the air around with their whistling wings and song to highlight a different spirit of the lake.
