Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: In Search of the Big One
Posted on November 8, 2014
There is a chill that cuts through the morning air these days, against the warm water it creates a mist that hovers over the lake, just hiding the numerous flocks of waterfowl that spring to life as the boat glides across the water. Making for the perfect setting as we merge into nature to join the bald eagles and seagulls in the search of fish. As the sun breaks through the horizon, waves rock the boat gently back and forth, you can feel the lake breathing. We hook into our first fish of the morning, its a big one, that's what we're after, the drag is spinning, “fish on” we yell. This experience is why we are here, to connect with nature, feel our heart pounding and remember what it means to be alive in this existence. The fishing is only an excuse to go out and be present for the sunrise, to spend time with friends and family on the water and to enjoy life.
With hunting season underway and school back in session, the heavy boat traffic which was present during warmer months has faded away, leaving behind a more peaceful environment. With fewer boats there is less pressure making for better more consistent fishing during the fall and winter months. Right now I'm using live bait fishing on the structure of underwater points, ledges, channels, stump beds, and brush piles in and around 15-30 ft. of water. The fish really love the places where there is structure on top of structure like a stump bed or brush pile on top of a ledge. Some days we drift, some days we anchor depending on the wind. This pattern has been working for me now for about a month and we have been catching some really nice fish on a regular basis. I enjoy targeting the larger fish and have developed a relationship with them to understand their patterns, I'm always learning more about them each trip we go out. What makes a successful trip to me, is a 10 pound plus fish in the boat taking a picture and setting it free. This is what creates the most memorable experience and gets people smiling and excited. Of course we take home a mess to eat as well.
During the colder months these bis fish are easier to target and keep up with. In a few weeks, we'll begin casting lures to catch them using sassy shad, a pattern which we will work all winter long through the end of March. Tis the season for big fish so be sure to get out on the water to experience what late fall and winter fishing is all about. I operate based on a gift economy meaning I have no set rates, we go fishing as friends and after the trip you are free to give in return whatever you feel the trip is worth to you, I'll be grateful for whatever you choose to give.
