Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Big Fish On Top, Fall Topwater Is Here!

Posted on August 26, 2024

Our morning begins before the sun. Gliding across the water in the boat during the twilight hours of dawn, you can't help but to be in awe at the grandeur of existence, the water lapping against the boat, the moon and stars still in the sky, the problems of the world fade away and everything is perfect just in this moment. I hope my clients are feeling this too, it can be easy to take for granted, it is just another sunrise after all. We arrive at where I hope the fish will be, they were here yesterday so if we are lucky they will be here again. It is too shallow to try to graph them and I'd rather not try to see them on side scan as it may spook them if I move around too much. I drop the trolling motor and sneak into position so we can cast to where the fish have been staging each morning. With the trolling motor locked on the spot, we wait. The first few casts with our big topwaters plugs produce nothing, I'm hoping it is still too early, it is always hard to know how long to wait before we begin searching, sometimes a little patience pays off. After several casts, it finally happens, a giant explosion right next to the boat, engulfing my clients topwater plug, the drag immediately starts to scream as the fish makes it's first run, fish on! As I'm working with my client to land the first fish, 2 more fish get hooked up and we have 3 fish on and it looks like they are all big, success! It's going to be a good day!

This is the fall topwater fishing experience. It is when we catch some of the biggest fish of the year and we do it on the surface, the most thrilling way to catch them and it has already started. This past couple of weeks we have already had some amazing trips blind casting topwaters for these big stripers in the shallows. This upcoming cold front and rain we are expected to have will only make it better. This time of the year, the stripers are seeking a reprieve from the heat and find comfort in the shallows where the water is first to cool during the coolest part of the day in the early morning. The cooler weather that is coming next week will really set this pattern off so get ready!

Surface action means its prime time for fly fishing, if your dream is to catch a big striper on the fly, now is one of the best opportunities of the year to do so. I began my adventure in fly fishing about 4 years ago and quickly developed a passion for it. It is now my favorite method to fish and I really enjoy my fly fishing trips. I have even started tying my own flies which adds a new level of appreciation and enjoyment to my profession. I really enjoy putting my clients on big fish, especially on the fly. Now through the first week in November, these big fish will be in the shallows morning where we can target them on the fly or with surface lures. You don't want to miss this opportunity!

The best time to come by far is during the week, with the fish in the shallows, being successful in this pattern depends on stealth and having too many boats in the area can really have an affect on the fishing. That said, lake traffic has slowed down considerably with the children back in school. The fishing all this week has been excellent followed by a Saturday with lots of boats on the water making for a lot slower day on the catching side of things compared to our trips earlier in the week. If you have to have a weekend though I do understand and we will catch fish, even though we have to work a little harder for them. My weekends are filling so if you can only come during a weekend you will want to book it asap. But remember, it is an excused absence for your children to skip school to go fishing, at least it should be. After all they will learn how to cast, work a topwater lure, set the hook, recognize fish on the electronics and if you are interested, I'll even teach them how to drive the boat. I enjoy teaching people how to fish and teaching in general. I will be happy to teach you and or your children everything I can while we are out on the water. If there is something specific you are wanting to learn while we are out on the water don't hesitate to let me know and we can gear our trip towards accomplishing all of your goals.

If you don't have a group of people to go with, no worries, we offer open boat trips where anyone can join the trip, just let me know that is your interest and we will work to get one organized. You can book your trips online at www.stripersinc.com or give me a call at (903)815-1609. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'll be looking forward to fishing with you,
