Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: The Birds Are Back and Fishing is Incredible!

Posted on October 12, 2009

I can’t remember the last time the sun was out and I hope it stays gone because this cloudy, wet, nasty, weather makes for some of the best fishing.  Lake Texoma elevation is ½ ft. above normal and slowly rising.  The water temperature is at 70° and falling.  The cooler water has really turned the fish on.  The birds have now shown up in large numbers and are working all over the lake.  There are tons of smaller fish that have moved out into the deeper water and are piling up in huge schools under the birds.  The larger fish have still not left the shallow water and some can still be caught on top but the topwater bite is getting less and less while cohoes, slabs, and sassys are getting better and better.  The bait bite is incredible right now.  Fishing is hot and its pretty much as good as it gets.

Friday Oct. 9: I had an evening trip today with three people. It was cold and windy which made for some good fishing. Got on the water at 2:30 and started beating the banks with topwaters. Made a couple of stops before we found them and it was on from there. Our biggest was around 12-13lbs. We had a hard time filling our limit because most all of them were over 20". I finally started using a cohoe and began catching smaller fish to put in the box. All fish came off pencil poppers and cohoes in shallow water.

Saturday Oct. 10 AM:  I had a 2 boat trip with 8 fishermen and the fishing was great.  I never opened my bait tank.  We threw topwaters and cohoes all morning long.  There was an even mix of big fish and little fish.  We had our 40 fish limit by 9:00 with all of our overs and the rest 17-19 in.  The second boat did mostly bait fishing and came in with there limit as well.  Most all of the fish caught in my boat were in 5ft or less.

Saturday PM:  (2 people) Went back to where I had left them biting that morning.  They were still there but not as aggressive.  The fish had gotten smaller on average but we where still catching a good fish every now and then.  The box fish were gone and the fish were either over 20” or small.  I decided to hit some different areas and started working my topwater spots but I would only catch one here and there with all of them over 20”  Then I saw the birds.  They were everywhere and the fish were stacked up underneath them.  Most all of them were small but there were some box fish mixed in here and there to finish out the limit.

Sunday AM: I had a group of 2 and they wanted to take advantage of my 10% catch and release discount so all of our fish went back into the lake.  We started the morning throwing topwaters and cohoes with good results.  We then switched to drifting bait and throwing cohoes under some birds that were working in shallow water around 10-12ft. There were good fish under them but it didn’t last too long.  I moved around some more and dropped anchor in 20ft on a school of real nice fish that were all over 20”  It was a good steady bite but not fast.   We finished up the morning hitting the topwater points on our way in catching 1-2 fish on every point.

Monday AM: (4 people)  I decided to start out using bait after getting on the better fish the day before and went back to where I had left them biting.  I found the fish stacked up solid and it was mayhem all morning long.  Nearly every fish was over 20” with the biggest up to 8lbs.  I was catching them 4 at a time! As fast as we could drop our baits down we would have 4 fish hooked up!  They ate up all 300 of my baits and I only had 27 fish to show for it while we probably threw back 40-50 that were over 20”  We pulled anchor and went over to where some birds were working to throw lures to finish up our limit.  There were tons of fish under the birds but they were all small.  What a great day fishing!
