Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: Free Trip Winner!

Posted on May 4, 2010

May is quite possibly the best month of the year to striper fish here on Lake Texoma. We are catching them literally as fast as you can drop a bait down. After we get them going, if you wait longer than a minute without getting a bite, then it is time to check your bait because you probably got robbed on the way down. Most all of the fish we have caught the past few days were caught using live bait fishing on anchor in 30-40 ft. of water over river ledges. My average size has improved considerably the past week with lots of overs in the 5-6 pound range with the occasional 8-10 pounder mixed in. It is not important to mark many fish, just beat the water and cut up some chum over the side of the boat and in anywhere between 0-20 minutes you will start catching fish. If it doesn’t happen within 20 minutes, its time to move and try it again.

Friday morning was overcast and we had our south wind back. It looked like perfect conditions for top water so that’s how we started the morning. We worked over several areas with only a few strikes. So I decide it is time to throw an anchor and drop down some bait. It doesn’t take long before the fish turn on. My guys only wanted to keep 12 fish or so and we get that in the first 10 minutes and caught and released fish until they couldn’t take it anymore. Most of the fish we caught were bigger on average than my previous trips. Did I mention, I love May!

Friday evening was no different. We were on fish as soon as we got the anchor set and it was on. My customers decided to take advantage of my catch and release discount so that’s just what we did. Fish were flying everywhere. The fish were feeding so well we were able to catch 4-5 fish using the same bait. Circle hooks are a must have for catch and release trips. We probably caught 60 or more fish and I only had to clean 4 that were bleeding which made for an excellent lunch on Sunday. We brined them all day Saturday and then Megan baked them with butter, fresh lemon juice, and fresh dill. It was awesome. Brining your fish is a must. The brine I use is 3 table spoons of salt and three table spoons of sugar to a ½ gallon of water with some ice to keep them cold. Brine them for 12-24 hours for the best results.

Saturday morning I tried top water again with the same results. We even had rain showers and I couldn’t get anything going on top water. It looks like it is about the end of lure fishing in the mornings and time to go straight to using bait. It was time to throw and anchor and the fish were right where I had left them. As mentioned before, I love May! The fish are in the same spot trip after trip and bite like crazy! We enjoyed a quick limit and caught and released until we were blue in the face.

Saturday evening I took out the winner of the spring drawing for the free trip for 2 that I give away for signing up for my fishing report via email on my website. Since I just had 2 people, I thought I would look around and see if there was a place that I couldn’t catch some bigger fish. We fished around for a while and caught a lot of fish in a few places but my original spot was holding bigger fish so I headed over to finish out the trip catching 5-6 pounders as fast as you can drop down.

Sunday morning I tried to be lazy and we started off by throwing a rope to another boat that was already catching fish. On that particular day, the fish didn’t seem to like it and his bite slowed down so I went to throw my own anchor and it was back to catching as usual. Another quick limit followed by some catch and release action.

Monday morning the Mayhem continued. We threw one anchor and we had our limit by 7:30. We fished until 9:00 before my guys called it using big gizzards.  We caught several smaller fish including a black bass and crappie but could only manage 2 strikes on the big gizzards and hooked up on one of them which was only about 6 pounds and not what I was looking for. I won’t be long before I should be catching big fish consistently using big gizzards.
