Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: April 1-2
Posted on April 4, 2011
The striper fishing this past weekend was a little on the slow side here on Lake Texoma but we still managed to put our fish in the box with a couple of nicer fish to boot. I’m still fishing 5” glow sassys and have yet to see a bait bite manifest itself on a consistent basis. Shallow structure was the key this weekend and if you weren’t fishing where you could get hung up then you weren’t catching fish. I can’t tell you how many lures we went through along with losing a rod, which was my own fault, but we caught fish and that’s all that matters. You might as well of turned your graph off this weekend because if you drove over the fish to mark them, you couldn’t catch them. You had to know where they were before hand and drift into them. If we caught 2 or 3 in any one spot we were doing good. I like that type of fishing though, it presents a challenge and you have to use your instincts rather than keeping your head buried in your graph.
Friday 4/1 AM I had a group of 3 and we start out casting right away. It doesn’t take us long before we boat our first fish, I move from spot to spot catching one here and there hoping the birds would start working but they never did. The phone calls I made to other guides told me that I had better stick with what I was doing. We meticulously worked the shallows from the cross all the way to Roosevelt and brought in 23 nice stripers, 2 of which were around 6 pounds. One of the bigger fish we released because it had worms coming out of its skin and didn’t look fit to eat.
Friday PM I had a group of 2 that I told I could take out after I was finished with my morning trip as long as they didn’t mind a shorter trip due to the time constraint. Well the time constraint didn’t matter because the fishing got down right good that evening. We were working the same spots and the birds never started working but the fish really turned on. At one time everyone in the boat had a fish hooked up. We caught our 20 fish limit in about 2 hours compared to the 6 hours it took us to get 23 fish that morning.
Saturday 4/2 AM I had a group of 2 and we started working that same pattern. Fishing was slow like on Friday morning but we were catching so I stuck with it and by about 1:00, we managed to put our 20 fish limit in the boat.
I had a trip scheduled for Sunday but I rescheduled it due to 25 mph winds which is not safe to be in on Texoma.
When I’m bringing home limits of fish on the slowest days it means that fishing is about to get good. Its April and spring has arrived which means we are going to catch a lot of fish. If your flexible, fishing is much better during the week because you do not have to compete with all the other boats for fish. I think the fish have learned over the years to fast during the weekends. You can book your trip online at www.stripersinc.com or just give me a call at (903)815-1609 and I’ll get you set up.
