Lake Texoma Fishing Report :: April Patterns Setting In

Posted on April 11, 2011

Fishing seems to be getting better by the day here on Lake Texoma as the fish are finally starting to settle into their April patterns. With the water temperature reaching into the 60’s, the fish are now feeding on a daily basis, although some days it doesn’t last long. Every year during this time, the fish make the preferential transition from lures to live bait as being the most tantalizing and productive method of getting their selves hooked in the lip. Right now I have to be prepared to do both as their preference seems to change back and forth throughout the day. Sassys seem to be producing more fish while they are feeding under the birds but live bait is more productive when the bite is slow. When the fish are feeding and the birds are working, the fish will hit either live or artificial but the fish are constantly on the move and the boats are swarming on the birds like piranhas on a steak. Fishing lures during this madness enables mobility to stay on the school of feeding fish whereas fishing bait will drastically slow you down. Fishing live bait, drifting with the wind in 15-35 ft. has been producing a few fish while the bite slows down.

I wouldn’t describe the fishing this past week as being easy but it’s definitely getting better and we are starting to put a good box of fish together on every trip. When they are feeding it is as fast as you can get bait in the water but enjoy it while it last because when it is over, we’re only catching about 5-10 an hour.

Tuesday 4/5, with just one person I had it easy. We moved around and threw lures picking up a fish here and there and got into them good later in the day drifting bait, he just wanted to keep a few fish and we turned back the rest.

Thursday 4/7, I fished 2 people and started out on my lure spots but the fish had finally moved off of structure and out into the open water. We looked around for a while and went to drifting bait which worked out well for us. We probably caught 25 fish and turned most of them back keeping about 6 for their supper.

Friday 4/8, I had another one person trip and we started with lures. The birds worked for us for a while and we picked up several before the boats rushed in and killed the bite. We switched to drifting live bait and they finally turned back on around 11:00 and caught them for another hour before he decided to head back to clean our 10 fish limit.

Saturday 4/9, I had a group of 5. All the other boats were ready for the birds to work today and swarmed in on the first sign. Unfortunately I was right in the middle of them as that was where the best fishing was. I prefer to find fish to myself but this was the best option I was aware of. We chased the birds throwing lures until it died down and switched to drifting bait. Drifting was a bit slower, possibly due to the increased boat traffic. We fished till 2:00 and brought in 27 fish.

Sunday, 4/10 I had a group of 2 which I had warned about the high winds that were in the forecast so we decided to play it by ear which ended up paying off for us. The wind calmed down a bit around 7:30 and let us get out and do some fishing.   When we got out the birds and fish were going crazy and there were only 2 other boats on them. In no time at all we had 18 in the box but just like that, it was over. We fished for another hour and caught one more before they decided they were ready to head in with just one fish shy of our limit.

Fishing will continue to get better by the day and will become more and more consistent. April, May, and June are the peak months for spring fishing and we have a lot of good fat stripers to catch. If you can get away, fishing is much better during the week as you do not have to compete with the other boats for the fish. You can book your trip online at www.stripersinc.com or just give me a call at (903)815-1609 and I’ll get you set up.
